H2020 FET-OPEN Ph.D. Position in Photonics for Externally Controllable Molecular Communications at the University of Cyprus
JOB SUMMARY
The KIOS Center of Excellence and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus (UCY), announce one vacancy for a full-time Ph.D. position (under the Special Scientist category), funded under the European Horizon 2020 project “GLADIATOR – Next-generation theranostics of brain pathologies with autonomous externally controllable nanonetworks: a trans-disciplinary approach with bio-nanodevice interfaces”. The GLADIATOR project is a Horizon 2020 FETOPEN project that involves 6 leading academic institutions (University of Cyprus, University of Oulu, Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Waterford Institute of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Osaka University) and EPOS- Iasis, a vibrant nano-biotechnology SME. The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree with specialization in photonics, preferably for biomedical applications. Additional expertise in microelectronics and/or microwave engineering is desirable (but not essential).
JOB DESCRIPTION
The aim of this Ph.D. position is to develop brain micro-implants that incorporate optoelectronics for fluorescence detection, within the framework of the GLADIATOR FET-OPEN project. GLADIATOR targets the creation of a theranostic (therapeutic + diagnostic) system for the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer, consisting of a head- wearable patch for power transfer and communication with a multimodal (RF, photonic and ultrasound) micro- implant. GLADIATOR will produce a working prototype of a complete, autonomous, clinically-applicable, nanonetwork-based molecular communications system based on externally controllable molecular communications (ECMC). That is, through breakthroughs in both cell biology and RF and photonic devices, the system will both monitor and treat brain tumours. The system will consist of a hybrid bio-electronic interface with coupled external and implantable devices, which will establish communication channels with host-derived fluorescent reporter cells via micro-optoelectronic sensors. The cellular, sub-cellular and electronic components will be integrated into a wireless ECMC system residing on the patient’s brain. The system will autonomously monitor the spatiotemporal tumour evolution and recurrence, and will generate on demand appropriate re- programming interventions by stimulating the engineered stem cells.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Development of a prototype hybrid brain micro-implant, including optoelectronics for fluorescence detection and heterogeneous integration with the associated drive electronics, transcranial power transfer and transcranial communications. The implemented solution is likely to require a multichip module approach, with development of photonic hybrid integrated circuits as part of this.
  • Close interaction and collaboration with other researchers in the GLADIATOR consortium, including reporting to the project coordinator as appropriate.
  • Collaborating and supporting the local team at UCY towards the implementation of research objectives.
  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
  • Masters degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline (ideally with a specialisation in optoelectronics, photonics or microelectronics)
  • Excellent command of the English language (written and verbal).
  • Experience of one or more of the following would be considered highly desirable: photonic devices, nano-optics, semiconductor devices, microelectronics, and molecular communications.
  • Excellent organisation, time management, collaboration and communication skills.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
The position is available on a contract basis for the initial period November 2020 – October 2022 and can be renewed for up to one additional year, subject to a satisfactory performance review. The cost salary for this full- time position is €3800 per month (Cost of employee and employer contributions will be deducted from this amount). The position does not include a 13th Salary bonus.

Short Description – Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible to conduct fundamental and/or applied research and/or engage in innovation and entrepreneurship activities in the area of Information and Communication Technologies, with emphasis on the Monitoring, Control, Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems. Depending on their qualifications and expertise, successful candidates will be responsible to prepare reports and project deliverables, contribute to the preparation of research proposals, and assist in the supervision of undergraduate students. Furthermore, successful candidates will be encouraged to publish their research results in international conferences and journals.
Profile of the ideal candidate: The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and/or in a team in fundamental and/or applied research, typically in the context of research and/or innovation projects. The ideal candidate must be able to produce, publish, and present research results in high quality conferences and journals and/or engage in innovation activities and transfer of knowledge, be able to prepare reports and project deliverables for KIOS CoE project(s), attend academic and/or other conferences and seminars for further personal and professional development, assist in the preparation of research and/or innovation proposals, present periodically to KIOS personnel the progress of their research, and assist in the training, education, and dissemination activities of the KIOS CoE.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or/and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Doctorate degree or equivalent in the subject areas directly related to Information and Communication Technologies or Engineering and Technology or Natural, Applied and Social sciences.
Employment Terms: The position is on a contract basis. Initially, a one-year contract will be offered but this is renewable based on performance. The gross monthly salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and expertise and will be between €1900 – €3100. The 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Social Insurance Laws from 1980 until 2012.

ATOS IT CHALLENGE 2021 – HOW DIGITAL CAN DECARBONIZE NON-DIGITAL

This year’s Atos IT Challenge seeks to develop digital solutions that will support multiple areas of decarbonization and decarbonization initiatives, helping companies and society as a whole to tackle climate change.

  • The following topics may be areas to explore when considering how digital solutions can support decarbonization initiatives.
    • Power generation and demand – Supporting a shift to nuclear, hydro, biofuels, geothermal, solar, wind and tidal forms of generation.
    • Power use and efficiency – Local power generation, distribution and community schemes; Use of energy storage solutions such as high-capacity batteries for homes; Use of digital technology to match demand to the supply of clean energy.
    • Industry – Helping to optimise or reduce the usage of steel and cement, as production of these materials results in large emissions of greenhouse gases.
    • Agriculture and farming – The use of inorganic fertilizers releases methane into the atmosphere. Additionally, Livestock farming (particularly cattle) produces large volumes of methane. Can we reduce these emissions, or use digital technologies to make better use of waste methane? How can digital technology help to prevent the destruction of rainforests, or aid in the recovery of deforested areas?
    • Transport – Can digital technology support a shift from fossil fuels to electricity or hydrogen? How can digital technology maximise the use of public transport, car sharing and rental schemes? Can digital aid the distribution and delivery networks supporting increased online product and grocery shopping? How can digital reduce emissions in shipping or air travel?
    • The environment – How can digital solutions help us develop and use carbon capture and storage technologies.’

The Challenge: Decarbonization

The Challenge is to develop a functioning application, mobile app, service or simulation to support industry, commerce or individuals in the drive for decarbonization. We are looking for interesting applications that could have immediate and impactful real-world applicability.  

Examples and Ideas Decarbonization

The following are initial ideas for possible competition entries, but the challenge is certainly not limited to these:
  • Applications to analyse climate data, perhaps using AI/ML techniques.
  • Modelling of energy (particularly electricity) distribution to meet future demands, perhaps bearing in mind weather forecast data.
  • Applications for individuals to inform and support decisions around energy supply, transport and diet.
  • Modelling tools match the supply of renewable electricity with the demand, perhaps involving battery or other storage mechanisms.
  • Soil management systems for agriculture.
  • Applications to track carbon in the supply chain and improve efficiency in commercial scenarios.
  • Applications to analyze the impact of Covid-19, such as increased remote working, on levels of CO2 in the environment.
  • Modelling of large-scale systems, such as shipping routes.
  • Carbon monitoring dashboards and information systems in the commercial environment, including the tracking of raw materials, premises lighting and heating, and staff travel.

Τρισδιάστατοι εικονικοί κόσμοι για την αντιμετώπιση του φοιτητικού άγχους ο στόχος του ερευνητικού έργου PLAY (Play, Learn, fight back AnxietY) Το φοιτητικό άγχος (με κύριες αιτίες την πίεση για αριστεία, τις εξετάσεις και το επαγγελματικό μέλλον) είναι πρόβλημα με ευρείες διαστάσεις στον χώρο της ανώτατης εκπαίδευσης. Αντικείμενο του ερευνητικού έργου «PLAY: Play, Learn, fight back AnxietY», στο οποίο συμμετέχει το Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (ΑΠΚΥ), είναι η ανάπτυξη και αξιολόγηση της αποτελεσματικότητας παιγνιώδους τρισδιάστατου εικονικού περιβάλλοντος, στο οποίο φοιτητές (προπτυχιακοί, μεταπτυχιακοί και ενήλικες) θα μπορούν να ασχολούνται με δραστηριότητες που θα τους προετοιμάζουν καλύτερα για την ακαδημαϊκή πλευρά της πανεπιστημιακή ζωής, ώστε να αντιμετωπιστεί το άγχος τους. Επικεφαλής της ερευνητικής ομάδας του ΑΠΚΥ είναι ο Καθηγητής Θανάσης Χατζηλάκος, διευθυντής του Εργαστηρίου Εκπαιδευτικής Τεχνολογίας. Το Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, με φοιτητές διαφορετικούς από τους συνήθεις (εργαζόμενους, οικογενειάρχες, με μέση ηλικία τα 35+ έτη, συχνά σε κρίσιμη προσπάθεια ανέλιξης ή στροφής στην καριέρα τους) αξιοποιεί τα ερευνητικά αποτελέσματα για την υποστήριξη και προς ωφέλεια των φοιτητών του. Το έργο “PLAY” χρηματοδοτείται από το Πρόγραμμα Erasmus+ (δράση: Στρατηγικές Συμπράξεις) και το συντονίζει το Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών. Στην κοινοπραξία υλοποίησής του συμμετέχουν ως εταίροι, πέραν του ΑΠΚΥ, οι εξής φορείς: η εταιρία OptionsNet στην Πάτρα, το Ευρωπαϊκό Ινστιτούτο Παιδικής Εκπαίδευσης και Ψυχολογίας (ICEP Europe) στην Ιρλανδία και το Πανεπιστημιακό Ινστιτούτο ISMAI στην Πορτογαλία. Το ReGeneration Academy on Cloud Tools & Technology powered by Microsoft άνοιξε τις πόρτες του και καλεί τους νέους πτυχιούχους που θέλουν να κάνουν ένα δυναμικό ξεκίνημα ή το επόμενο βήμα στην καριέρα τους, να δηλώσουν συμμετοχή. Οι αιτήσεις θα παραμείνουν ανοιχτές από τις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου έως και τις 29 Σεπτεμβρίου στις 14:00, και συμμετοχή μπορούν να δηλώσουν νέοι έως 29 ετών, με 0-3 χρόνια εργασιακή εμπειρία, συμμετοχή σε εξωακαδημαϊκές δραστηριότητες, οι οποίοι είναι απόφοιτοι των τμημάτων STEM, Computer Science & Software Engineering, καθώς και των ακόλουθων ακαδημαϊκών κατευθύνσεων:
