RESEARCHER – NETWORK TRAFFIC ANALYSIS FOR ANOMALY DETECTION

King Saud University (KSU) is the premier institution of higher education in Saudi Arabia and the region, and was established in 1957. It has large faculty and student (both undergraduates and postgraduates) bodies. It receives its funding from government’s allocation, own endowments, and research and consulting services.

Project Detail:

The detection of anomalies in network traffic, such as low volume attacks and abnormalities, has become a pressing problem in today’s large volume of Internet traffic. To this end, various anomaly detection techniques have been developed. Network traffic analysis is a powerful tool the enables such detection with high scalability and efficiency. Of particular research interest to this project towards analyzing network traffic for anomaly detection are the following tools: pattern recognition for advanced network attacks, machine learning and statistical algorithms, distributed algorithms and game theory. Development and research on some of these tools will be the “heart” of the research project.

The successful applicant will perform high-quality research within the Networks and Signal Processing team at the Electrical Engineering Department at King Saud University in topics related to computer networks and network security. The post is for 1 year; however it is renewable each year based on the researcher’s performance. The post is partially funded during the first two years by the British Council and is in the area of Computer Network Security. The successful applicant should be prepared to travel to the partner university at UK, i.e., Loughborough University, for meetings, short term visits and for forging collaboration ties.

In addition, the project will follow a practical/demonstrable approach, rather than restrict in theoretical approaches, and therefore, network traffic analysis and vulnerability exploration are going to be elements of the project.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should be highly motivated and have at least an MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or similar related fields. Candidates must also have experience in publishing research findings in international journals and conference proceedings.

Skills:

Research experience in computer network monitoring and analysis, knowledge of the principles of computer network protocols, their capabilities and restrictions, and machine learning is essential. Moreover familiarity with Matlab, Python, C or similar programming language and experience in Linux configuration is required.

Funding information:

The position’s monthly salary will be based on the applicant’s qualifications, research experience, and publication record. The salary will include an annual housing allowance. The total monthly compensation will approximately range between SAR 8,100 and SAR 8,900 (Note: There is no income tax in Saudi Arabia). Medical care at the university’s hospital is provided along with air tickets including family members to the county of origin.
