The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus announces 5 research positions (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) for the summer 2026 session for active undergraduate university students. KIOS provides an inspiring environment for carrying out high-level research in the area of Information and Communication Technologies with emphasis on the Monitoring, Control and Security of Critical Infrastructures, including power and energy systems, water networks, transportation networks, telecommunication networks, healthcare systems, and systems for emergency management and response. The Center instigates interdisciplinary interaction and promotes collaboration between industry, academia, and research organizations in high-tech areas of global importance. Students selected will work with the academics and KIOS researchers in research and innovation programs of the Center. The positions are open to students from all sectors who believe they can work and contribute to technological research projects. The internship students can work in one of the following application areas of the Center:
  • Intelligent transportation systems
  • Smart water networks
  • Next generation telecommunication systems and networks
  • Power systems, smart grids, and integration of renewable energy sources
  • Robotics, embedded and IoT hardware and software systems
  • Disaster management and health care/biomedical systems
The working hours and the period of employment are flexible. It is expected that students will work 35 hours per week. The duration of employment will be agreed with the selected students and may vary from 4 to 8 weeks (between June 2 and July 24, 2026) and will include a mandatory presentation between July 20 and 24, 2026. Part-time Internship Positions for University Students

The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence has launched the “KIOS Internships” initiative, aimed to provide valuable work experience to undergraduate and postgraduate university students. This Call of the KIOS Internships program will give the opportunity to undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities in Cyprus or abroad to work at the KIOS CoE, which is the largest research center of the University of Cyprus and it currently employs more than 200 researchers. The KIOS CoE provides an inspiring environment for carrying out top-level Research and Development in the area of Information Communication Technologies (ICT), with emphasis on the Monitoring, Control, Management and Security of Critical Infrastructures, including power and energy systems, water, transportation and telecommunication networks, healthcare systems, as well as systems for emergency management and response. The Center is involved in several research and innovation projects funded by various European and national funding agencies, as well as projects funded by the industry. Duties Selected students will work on a specific project with the guidance of an experienced team of KIOS CoE researchers. Their work will be related to one of the following topics: Employment Terms Students will have the opportunity to be employed for an initial period of 3 months, which can be renewed for a longer period depending on the student’s performance and availability, as well as the needs of each project. This period of employment will be a trial period. Students will be allocated space to work, and they are required to have a physical presence at KIOS CoE during their work hours. The selected candidates are expected to start their internship placement on June 1, 2026 (for those interested in a summer internship) or on September 1, 2026 (for those interested to work during the Fall Semester 2026). The employment status will be part-time with a maximum working time of 20 hours per week during the academic year of the University of Cyprus and 35 hours per week during the holiday periods at the University of Cyprus, with gross salary 7,77 €/hour. Various contributions (social insurance, etc.) will be deducted from the gross salary, in accordance with the existing legislation.   • Undertake research related to the interdependencies of critical infrastructures, the resilience of power and interdependent systems (including communications, water, etc.), and digital twins.
  • Apply optimization algorithms for risk- and resilience-aware operational and investment planning in the critical power and interdependent infrastructures.
  • Contribute towards the publication of peer-reviewed conference and journal papers.
  • Work closely with other researchers and engineers in the team to develop comprehensive solutions.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or/and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Doctorate degree or equivalent (necessary for the Research Associate position while in the case of the Research Engineer position will be considered as an advantage) in the subject areas directly related to Electrical Power Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or other related field from an accredited institution.
  • Expertise on modelling, operating and planning power and power-telecom systems.
  • Experience of interdependency modelling of system-of-systems and cascading effects, and resilience of critical infrastructure systems.
  • Track record of publishing high quality research (applicable for the Research Associate position).
  • Experience with real time systems/algorithms development C/C++, Python.
  • Track record of being involved in project implementation and experience in preparing reports and deliverables.
  • Experience with IoT platforms for data collection will be considered as advantage.
  • Experience with spatiotemporal time series data processing will be considered as advantage.
Employment Terms: The positions are on a contract basis. Initially, a one-year contract will be offered, with a 6-month probation period, which is renewable based on performance. The gross monthly salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and experience and will be between €1900 – €2700 for Research Engineer, and between €2300 – €3500 for Research Associate. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. A 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Maternity Protection Law 1997(Ν.100(Ι)/1997), and the existing amendment laws. Η Equal Society – Κοινωνία Ίσων Ευκαιριών, σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Εριφύλη, ολοκληρώνει την υλοποίηση του έργου «Παρατηρητήριο παρακολούθησης εθνικών, ευρωπαϊκών και διεθνών πολιτικών για την εξάλειψη της βίας κατά των γυναικών – Περιφέρειες Αττικής, Δυτικής Ελλάδας και Ιονίων Νήσων», το οποίο υλοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος PREVENT.

Το έργο συγχρηματοδοτείται από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, μέσω του προγράμματος Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV), το Ίδρυμα Μποδοσάκη και το Κέντρο Στήριξης ΜΚΟ. Στο πλαίσιο της ολοκλήρωσης του έργου, η Equal Society διοργανώνει Ημερίδα Λήξης στην Κέρκυρα, με στόχο την παρουσίαση των αποτελεσμάτων και των βασικών συμπερασμάτων του Παρατηρητηρίου, καθώς και τη συζήτηση γύρω από τις προκλήσεις, τις καλές πρακτικές και τις προοπτικές για την αποτελεσματικότερη πρόληψη και καταπολέμηση της βίας κατά των γυναικών.

Η εκδήλωση φιλοδοξεί να αποτελέσει έναν χώρο διαλόγου και ανταλλαγής εμπειριών μεταξύ φορέων, οργανώσεων της κοινωνίας των πολιτών, τοπικών αρχών και πολιτών για την αποτελεσματική καταπολέμηση της βίας κατά των γυναiκών. Automatic Component-Wise Design of Algorithms for Optimization and Machine Learning

Modern high-performing algorithms for Optimization and Machine Learning are often the result of the careful composition of diverse algorithmic ideas. Often such algorithms are designed by human experts guided by their expertise and laborious trial-and-error. Nowadays, it is possible to automatically design such algorithms by combining flexible algorithmic frameworks and general-purpose hyper-parameter optimizers. In this talk, we will explain the general principles behind this automatic design approach and illustrate its use with several examples.  We will also discuss how LLMs may represent (or not) the next evolution of this component-wise design approach.   • Development and implementation of applications to automate our infrastructure, cloud, and security environments, along with their associated backend systems
  • Contributiοn of fresh perspectives and proposals for the continuous improvement of current applications.
  • Independent and/or joint design and implementation for security and native client applications
  • Orchestrating in the environment of the DTS Security Operation Center
  • Development of requirements together with the operating team
  • Cooperation with teams to build and refine application interfaces.
  • Engagement in teamwork and continuous knowledge-sharing within the development team
Your profile
  • Working experience with programming language C#, .NET or related
  • Knowledge in software testing and understanding of software development processes
  • Enjoy learning new languages and approaches
  • Structured and solution-oriented way of thinking
  • Distinct ability to work in a team and passion for modern IT
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • Writing and maintaining unit tests with using frameworks like Jest, Mocha, or Chai
  • Building test plans that cover functionality, edge cases, and performance bottlenecks
  • Perform code reviews with focus on test coverage and structure
  • Debug failed tests and track bugs trough resolution
  • Creating mock services and data for isolated testing
  • Documenting testing strategies and maintaining QA guides for consistency
  • Close collaboration with the development team
Your profile
  • Experience in QA/testing with a strong background in Node.js application testing (2 years or more)
  • Proficient in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern testing tools
  • Familiar with API testing, mocking strategies and using Git, JIRA and test data tools
  • Proactive in identifying weaknesses and improving test coverage
  • Structured, communicative and solution-oriented with a focus on code quality, test coverage and security
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
