The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (www.kios.ucy.ac.cy) at the University of Cyprus is accepting applications for the position of IT Specialist, for full-time employment. The successful candidate will provide IT support to all KIOS CoE personnel and assist in maintaining KIOS CoE IT systems. In coordination with the KIOS IT team, he/she will be responsible to ensure the effective and secure operation of all computer systems, related applications, hardware, and software, to help the KIOS CoE achieve its strategic objectives. Applicants are expected to have physical presence at the KIOS CoE in Nicosia, Cyprus.

KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE)

The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence is the largest research center at the University of Cyprus and in 2017 was upgraded to a European Research Center of Excellence through the KIOS CoE Teaming project. Currently, the Center employs more than 145 people who are supported by externally funded research and innovation projects.

KIOS provides an inspiring environment for carrying out top level research and innovation in the area of Information and Communication Technologies, with emphasis on the Monitoring, Control and Security of Critical Infrastructures. Such infrastructures include power and energy systems, water networks, transportation networks, telecommunication networks and emergency management and response. The Center instigates interdisciplinary interaction and promotes collaboration between industry, academia and research organizations in high-tech areas of global importance. Job details:

Short Description – Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to:

1) Provide IT support to all KIOS CoE personnel:

i) Provide support in daily issues that may occur including a simple failure of equipment to daily software, hardware, or network issues,

ii) prepare equipment for new personnel including formatting the equipment and installing basic licensed software depending on the needs,

iii) introduce the newcomers to IT related services offered by the University of Cyprus

iv) Setup, maintain and support webpages by webserver installations of the backbone, including troubleshooting database creation, user account management, backups, and software installations.

2) Provide support in the maintenance of all KIOS CoE IT systems and networks:

i) Set specifications for equipment and communicate with suppliers for acquiring new
equipment, always following the appropriate procedures,

ii) Keep updated records of all the IT equipment of the Center, updating serial number of all
the equipment and its location,

iii) Assist in the design and implementation of new IT systems to support Research and
Innovation Projects by installing and configuring new software or hardware.

3) Identify future needs and propose new IT technologies related to research, innovation and administrative activities of the Center.

Required knowledge:

  • Computer and Electronics: knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic
    equipment, computer hardware and software, including applications and programming,
    networks, operating systems and virtual environments.
  • Networks: knowledge of local area networks, wide area networks, basic security of networks, networks protocols and management of webservers.
  • Operating systems: knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems including set-up, configuration, installation, user and access management.
  • Virtual environments: knowledge of installation and configuration of back-end applications, set-up of virtual environments and virtual machines.
  • Very good knowledge of the Greek and English language.

 

Required skills and abilities:

The ideal candidate must exhibit excellent team-working, organizational, self-management and communication skills. He/She must possess technical and analytical skills, should have the abilities of critical thinking and complex-problem solving, where he/she should be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to specific problems. Further, he/she should have the quality of being reliable and trustworthy, self-discipline, be able to demonstrate a commitment to carrying out his/her responsibilities and have an adherence to ethical principles.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science or other related field from an accredited institution.

Employment Terms:

The position is on a contract basis. Initially, a two-year contract with be offered, with a 6-month probation period, which is renewable based on satisfactory performance evaluation. The gross monthly salary will be in the range of €1500 – €1750, depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and prior experience. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus Government funds will be deducted. A 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. Maternity leave will be granted based on Social Insurance Laws from 1980 until 2012.
